2008 MICCS Awards Banquet Results
Bowen Engineering Corporation
2008 Excellence in Safety Crystal Eagle Award Recipient
For the second year in a row, Bowen Engineering Corporation was awarded MICCS's highest honor for a company - the "2008 Excellence in Safety Crystal Eagle Award." This marked the first time a company has won the award in consecutive years and was presented to the largest crowd of construction professionals in Indiana's history: 1,050 registered for the event.
Judges were impressed with how Bowen continues to grow substantially in size each year, while still managing to produce downward trending statistical rates. With a strong executive level commitment to safety, they have implemented a strategic safety plan much the same way that a company would develop and implement a business plan.
In one judge's words, Bowen "appeared to want to make a statement that 'we are not going to play games when it comes to safety".
Their devotion to making safety a business priority shows through their leadership challenge program, which selects a handful of employees and puts them through a leadership development program. A safety professional is required to be a part of this program. This creates succession in safety expertise within the company.
In addition, this company has implemented a "know your tool" training program. This program allows for cross training on tools so that there are always at least two people on a project that know how to handle a specific tool safely.
Doug Bowen, President of Bowen, noted during his acceptance speech that the hundreds of Bowen employees are all responsible for their safety performance and that it is always seen as a team effort in their company.
The 2008 MICCS "Excellence in Safety" "Leader" Awards
Every company in the "Excellence in Safety" Awards program competed with their peers in one of eight categories. "Safety Leader" Awards were given to companies that were deemed to have the most outstanding safety program and record within their category. These companies were the nominees for the "Crystal Eagle" award. Considered the best in their category were:
Steinberger Construction - GC Under 300,000 man hours
Bowen Engineering Corporation - GC Above 300,000 man hours
Smoot Construction - CM/Developer
Ter Horst, Lamson, & Fisk - Design
Smock Fansler - Specialty Contractor
Roche Diagnostics - Owner
Shambaugh & Sons - Mechanical

MICCS congratulates these companies, deemed to have been the "best in class," an important achievement for many reasons and a distinction that is important in this highly competitive industry.
Community Health Network and Summit Construction Co.
Receive the 2008 Outstanding Project Award
Each year, this award is amongst the most debated by the judges. This year, Community Health Network and Summit Construction Co. put forth a submission that rose above all others in the eyes of the judges.
Dealing with an extremely aggressive time schedule and a complex project, the 2008 outstanding project team was able to manage a coordination effort that not only allowed a safe working environment for craftspeople, but also a safe working environment for the occupants of

The construction team was challenged with a mix of contradictory elements - saving time while dealing with complex architectural designs- giving rise to safety concerns. This team overcame this challenge and developed several ways to be efficient on their aggressive time schedule and ensure safety.
The team engineered a unique way to load materials onto the multiple-level building with an apparatus called "the magic Arm". In fact, this team was the first in the United States to take advantage of this technology for this type of building. The Magic arm allowed workers to safely and efficiently lift materials onto each floor while remaining tied off inside the building's exterior wall. This also reduced a safety hazard by eliminating the need to build an exterior loading platform.
In addition, the construction team was faced with dealing not only with their craftspeople but also with the medical patients inside the building. The project was coordinated so that clean room systems and noise reduction were top priorities to avoid the development of patient infections or agitating very ill people.
Although, not a requirement, Gary Price, President of MICCS, commented that the judges were impressed to see that each company of the construction team utilized for this project is a member of MICCS.
The 2008 MICCS Zero Injury Award Winners
This year, MICCS modified the presentation of this award slightly in order to more prominently highlight this special achievement. MICCS invited Jeff Carter, Deputy Commissioner, IOSHA, to present each company that accomplished the remarkable feat of working throughout 2007 without a singe craft person suffering an accident of significant nature even though each had significant exposure to job hazards.

Jeff Peek Receives MICCS Highest Individual Award
Jeff Peek, a partner at Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman, received the 2008 MICCS Board of Directors Award on Thursday April 17 in front of a sellout crowd attending the 15th Annual Anniversary & Awards Banquet. The award is given to an individual recognizing them for the extraordinary service they have provided to MICCS and their outstanding achievements within the organization.
Gary Price, President of MICCS, remarked that Peek has helped to transform MICCS from an idea into a corporation providing a common sense approach to complex problems that helped MICCS survive and thrive.
"The MICCS Board of Directors learned through the years that their lawyer gave much more than legal advice and that he cared as much about the mission of MICCS as anyone," said Price.
